What is Literature/
Qu'est-ce que la littérature?
Welcome!
We invite you to participate in the 28th annual conference of the Southern Comparative Literature Association,
"What is Literature/Qu'est-ce que la littérature?"
The meeting will be held at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, 10-12 October, 2002.
Fall is a beautiful time in Tuscaloosa--almost as gorgeous as spring--and we hope to offer you balmy weather as well as a stimulating intellectual program.
In addition to the usual paper sessions, which provide for the exchange of ideas on specific topics, we have also planned two plenary sessions; one will feature Prof. David Damrosch of Columbia University, the current president of the American Comparative Literature Association, speaking on "What is World Literature?" The other, the opening plenary session on Thursday evening, will center on a panel discussion of "Comparative Literature, World Literature, National Literatures: Conflict or Continuum?" as a preliminary investigation of Sartre's question. Speakers will be Margaret Higonnet, Marcel Cornis-Pope, and Sharon O'Dair.
On the lighter side of things, we have planned a buffet banquet for Friday evening in the architecturally interesting Moody Music Center, followed by an inter-arts concert organized by faculty from various fields.
The conference hotel will be the Sheraton Four Points, located on the University of Alabama campus.
We hope that you will plan to join us for this stimulating weekend. We hope to see you in Tuscaloosa in October!
With best wishes,
